Wave technology optimized by the power of natural movement.

As a leader in wave energy, Seaturns transforms waves into a clean, local source of power

The concept

Under the action of the swell, a cylindrical floater moves horizontally. This back and forth movement is called Surge.

Seaturns innovative anchoring system converts this surge movement into pitch.

Inside the floater there is a water pendulum and two air-filled chambers at the top, separated by an axial vertical divider. The rotation of the floater combined to the water pendulum creates pressure cycles of the two air chambers.

The air flow generated rotates a turbine directly coupled to a generator to produce electricity

Our innovation

Optimal engineering for maximum efficiency

  • Simple design : no high-tech components, reducing manufacturing complexity and production costs.
  • Fast, cost-effective deployment : installation with a small vessel. The mooring line is shared, patented and light.
  • Minimum maintenance, simple and in-situ : all the technology is located in the PTO module. Modular architecture enabling a small PTO module block switch for fast, safe interventions that can be carried out directly at sea.

Robustness and reliability in extreme conditions

  • Validation in real-life conditions : ¼-scale tests demonstrated resistance to severe conditions, including the Ciaran storm (equivalent to 14 m waves at scale 1).
  • Optimized geometry : cylindrical architecture for maximum structural strength and a fully submersible float to minimize the impact of hydrodynamic forces.
  • High-performance materials : steel construction for enhanced strength and durability in extreme marine environments.

Reduced environmental footprint

  • Optimized carbon footprint : emissions limited to 15 g CO₂/kWh, significantly lower than competing technologies (40 for solar, 455 for gas, 840 for oil, 1000 for coal).
  • Minimal impact on marine ecosystems : mutualized mooring lines, reducing the footprint on the seabed and lightweight design limiting the use of materials..
  • Environmental friendly design : 98% recyclable floater, limiting consumption of resources and minimized visual impact (3 to 3.5 m above sea level).

for a successful innovation

Essais au bassin à houle du LHEEA
2015-2017

Proof of concept

Tests in the wave tank at Centrale Nantes' LHEEA confirmed Seaturns' ability to absorb wave energy and convert it into pneumatic power. A capture width ratio in excess of 20% was observed, with potential for further improvement. This period also enabled the concept evaluation and a patent to be filed. The technology was then classified as TRL 1.

2018–2021

Optimization

Seaturns has optimized its system through numerical studies and tank tests. In 2020, tests were carried out in Porto, with a multi-floater configuration and in Aalborg to test resistance to extreme conditions. The economic study and analysis of the conversion chain reinforced the viability of the project, taking the technology to TRL levels 2 and 3.

Pilot

Seaturns tested a 1:10 scale prototype in Cantabria and validated survival configurations at Centrale Nantes. A 1/4-scale demonstrator was tested at sea with Ifremer, funded by France 2030 and the EU. The multi-floater configuration was validated at scale 1/15.
This phase marked the achievement of TRL levels 4 and 5.

Sea trials and commercialization

With the completion of the 1/4-scale trials, all the technological blocks have been validated. Seaturns will start full-scale sea trials on the SEM-REV with Open-C in summer 2025. This step paves the way for the deployment of the first commercial pilot farms and marks the progression towards TRL levels 6 to 9.

Wave resources in the world

Non-intermittent energy

stabilité de la ressource

Stable and uninterrupted power

Unlike solar or wind, wave power is stable and predictable. Waves retain their power over long distances, regardless of local conditions. This continuity makes them a reliable source of energy that complements other renewable energies.

Lighter mooring system than offshore wind

Offshore wind infrastructures require noisy, destructive installations and several months of installation work. With only two anchors for 10 devices, Seaturns mooring is less invasive and quicker to install.

Higher energy density

Wave energy offers a very high energy density. Seaturns uses less space while producing more energy, this reduces impact on the marine ecosystem.

Installation flexibility

Seaturns installation is made easy and can be done anywhere in the world, over a vast variety of locations. Water depth, wave heights, wave direction, tidal range, Seaturns fits them all.

No visual impact

Unlike wind turbine, (> 100m diameter ; > 75m high) Seaturns is unobtrusive and unnoticeable from the shore.

Smaller marine footprint

Seaturns uses 3 to 5 times less space than wind turbines, allowing a smaller marine footprint and more environmental-friendly energy solution.

Discover wave energy

Unlike solar and wind power, wave energy is more stable and can be predicted up to two weeks in advance, enabling better integration into the power grid.

The oceans could, in theory, supply far more electricity than the world demands. In the United States, the estimated potential covers more than 60% of electricity consumption.

With 70% of the planet covered by oceans, waves are a renewable energy source available 24/7, whatever the weather.

Even when the wind dies down, the waves keep going thanks to lunar gravitational forces and ocean currents, guaranteeing continuous electricity production.

Nearly 40% of the world's population lives less than 100 km from the coast, reducing transmission losses and infrastructure costs.

Once installed, wave energy infrastructures generate zero CO₂ emissions, helping to combat global warming.
