The site was selected for its optimal wave conditions and logistical accessibility, essential for testing the float’s performance in an environment representative of future industrial deployment.
Nouvelle-Aquitaine is a key region for the development of marine technologies and renewable energies, thanks to its diverse industrial ecosystem, strong maritime network, and recognized offshore expertise.
Supported by the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux (GPMB), Seaturns benefits from top-level institutional and technical support for this critical demonstration phase. The deployment area will soon undergo detailed environmental and visual impact studies, in line with the requirements for obtaining a temporary maritime domain occupation permit (AOT).
Located in Bordeaux for nearly a decade, Seaturns leverages its proximity to regional partners and its expertise in maritime testing and energy innovation.
Seaturns recently ended its collaboration with the Open-C Foundation due to disagreements over the test conditions for the demonstrator off Saint-Nazaire. This decision allows the company to fully focus on the Nouvelle-Aquitaine project and continue developing its technology in a controlled and coherent environment.
Phase II full-scale tests follow the first 1/4 scale demonstrator tested in 2023 at IFREMER’s site in Brest. This new stage aims to:
Validate the float’s dynamic behavior under real sea conditions.
Continue maintenance and operational procedures.
Confirm the reliability of the energy conversion system (PTO).
The results will pave the way for the industrialization phase and commercial deployment of the technology, planned for late 2026.
This phase represents a strategic milestone for Seaturns and the European wave energy sector, demonstrating the robustness, competitiveness, and economic viability of electricity generation from wave energy.
The completion of fabrication and the start of sea trials mark a decisive step for Seaturns. With this demonstrator, the company reaches a major milestone in validating its technology in real-world conditions, contributing to the energy transition and the development of an innovative sector in France and Europe.
